What makes a good leader

What makes a good leader? I would think that a good leader is person whom can lead by example. However, if you look at the presidents, they really do not lead by example. They order or motivate people to do things or go fight in wars. The people in the military know what they sign up for so I guess they know what they are getting into when they join the military. It does not seem like they really lead by example. They campaign to get elected so they owe favors while in office.
If you look a business a good leader may be someone who can get their corporation to make money for its shareholders. The person must be able to make decisions to make the company profitable. It seems like most leaders on Wall Street seem to be into getting themselves rich and not leading anything.
Some people must just be born to lead. When you lead, it seems like all the problems come to you so you must be a good problem solver. If you own your own business, then you are your own leader. However, you can do what you want and don’t need to deal with the public.
If you consider the President, is he a good leader? Obama ran on platform of hope & change. During his campaign he promised to end the war in Iraq and close Gitmo which probably got him elected over John McCain. This has not been completed even when Congress is controlled by Democrats. He did pass health care reform making it a crime to not have health insurance. I am sure insurance companies hoped and loved that change in the law. President Obama is more of a moderator than a leader.
Some people can lead and tell other people what to do. They always do not have a good result. I guess they could be good at leading and bad at making decisions.
