The following is a list of people or groups who will benefit the most from the oil spill.
1. Gulf lawyers
Gulf lawyers are going to over run with work working on claims against BP for the oil spill. The government just created a $20 billion fund and I am sure lawyers will want to get their share of the funds for work done.
2. Wall Street bankers and Hedge Fund managers.
Wall Street bankers love the news because it detracts from the news about their government funded bailout bonuses. In addition, Goldman Sachs has already profited when it sold a huge amount of BP shares prior to the oil spill. Also, you know that all the Hedge Funds are probably shorting BP or have some insider information that the average chum investor like me or you is not privy to such as the future oil rig explosion or the housing bubble. You know Goldman Sachs can also make money from government spending and the bailout of banks so it is probably making money off of BP’s spill by buying oil futures or some other complicated investment scheme.
3. Oil Companies not drilling off the US coast.
Oil companies not drilling off the US coast will benefit from this disaster. You know that Congress and Obama will shut down drilling and impose tougher regulations off the US coast. Oil companies operating in the Bakken Formation should do fine as drilling will be more acceptable on land in areas like North Dakota and Eastern Montana. Canadian oil companies and oil trusts will also benefit because they are not subject to US regulation and their shipping costs are lower than the Middle East oil companies. In addition, clean up companies should have work for a long time given BP’s failure to cap the well.
4. People who don’t want publicity
People like Bernie Madoff and Rod Blagojevich will benefit from the nonstop cable news coverage of the gulf oil spill because it will take publicity away from their problems. Maybe Rod would like the publicity because he was on the Celebrity Apprentice.
5. People who don’t want oil drilling off the US coast.
This disaster will most likely shut down drilling off the US coast or make it difficult to drill near the US coast. This will make the US even more dependent on foreign oil.
